At Kathaa, we believe in taking a trauma-informed, queer affirmative approach toward therapy!
What this means is that we like to understand how our mind and body play a very important role in our mental health. We like to use techniques and therapies which adapt to a trauma focued lens.
Therapies we use
We adopt and use inspiration from different therapies and approaches to tailor-make the best approach for you! Some of the therapies we use are
1. Somatic therapy: We use inspiration from somatic approaches like Integral Somatic Psychology which is an effective somatic psychology approach that helps clients achieve optimal mental health by fully embodying their emotions. We also use exercises to help with somatic release and grounding. we believe the body plays a huge role in how our body can store our emotions for us. understanding our emotions comes with being in-tune with our body as well.
2. Trauma informed: Taking a mind and body-based approach to understanding how emotions impact our body. A trauma-informed perspective helps us understand how our nervous system plays a role in our mental health and emotions. It helps connect the mind and body and see where our body is holding these emotions and the automatic responses our body takes to protect us in our environment.
3. Narrative therapy: Narrative therapy tries to understand the stories we attach to our traumatic experiences and what meaning have we attached to them. it helps re-write our narrative. The process allows the individual to find their voice and explore events in their lives and the meanings they have placed on these experiences. As their story is put together, the person becomes an observer to their story and looks at it with the therapist, working to identify the dominant and problematic story. It's a process where we see our story from afar, deconstruct and it, and give it a new meaning.
4. EMDR: Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an innovative approach that aims to help individuals heal from traumatic or distressing life experiences. This technique involves specific eye movements or tapping while processing traumatic memories, with the goal of alleviating the associated distress and promoting healing. EMDR follows a structured method to help us reprocess our traumatic memories where the brain does the work for us.
5. Strenght based approach: We advocate for our clients' strengths, embracing a philosophy that centers on empowering individuals to recognize the depth of their capabilities and talents. Our role is to guide them in identifying and cultivating their inherent strengths, while also acknowledging and addressing areas of improvement. By providing support, encouragement, and practical strategies, we assist our clients in developing sustainable methods to amplify and harness their strengths, ultimately fostering a balanced approach to embracing their full potential.
6. Person centered therapy: We empower our clients to recognize and develop their strengths while addressing areas needing improvement. The focus is the client and empowering them in a way where they feel autonomous to make their own decisions and take care of recognizing their feelings and what their body needs
7. Internal family systems: IFS theorizes that the human mind consists of various parts, with an individual's core or true Self lying beneath them. Similar to members of a family, a person's inner parts may adopt extreme roles or subpersonalities. Each part maintains its unique perspective, interests, memories, and viewpoint. An informed approach helps us understand them and work together with them to create a safer and more trusting environment for us and our bodies.
8. Queer affirmative therapy: At Kathaa, we adopt an intersectional approach where we focus on addressing the needs of the queer community and understanding the role of privilege and marginalization in the LGBTQIA+++ communities. We aim to make our space a safer one to explore and understand identities.
